STEPHEN MINISTRY
Stephen Ministry is a caregiving
ministry that is active in more than 100 denominations
worldwide. Over 250,000 Christian laypersons have been
trained as Stephen Ministers in over 8,000 congregations.
Now St. Andrew is joining the ranks of those who have found
this caregiving ministry to be a vessel of the risen Christ
to the pastoral needs in their midst. Stephen Ministry
is a caregiving ministry conducted by laypersons. It does
not replace the pastoral care of the pastoral staff, but
augments and supports what the pastors are doing. It assumes
that the caregiving needs of the congregation are much
larger than any pastoral staff can manage alone, so it
involves laypersons in sharing the one–on–one
individual care desperately needed by so many.
Why would a person want to
be a Stephen Minister? A variety of reasons...
• Stephen
Ministry is a great avenue of serving Christ by reaching
out to the needs of others.
• It’s an active,
vital way of being the body of Christ to each other.
• Being
a Stephen Minister is an embodiment of the fact that, through
baptism, we are all ministers to each other.
• There
are needs in people’s lives that are crying out to
be met. In extending the love of Christ to others, we can
all be the face of Christ to our neighbors.
