What does it mean to belong to God in both life and in death? What does it mean to be claimed in love even before we become aware of the claiming in order to respond? The Reformed tradition teaches us that we are claimed through God’s loving initiative before we can respond in faith. And we are invited to the table not because we are worthy but because our host, the Risen Christ, claims us as his own.

Join us as we learn more about the sacraments of the church and experience how they can shape and transform our lives. We will answer questions as we struggle together to discern what it means to be claimed and set apart as the people of God.

The seven-week study, Krazy Kinfolk: Exploring Dysfunctional Families of the Bible, by Barbara J. Essex, is the basis for spirited discussions about what “family” means in the Bible and how we are to understand the term in today’s context.

Disciples’ Roundtable
Room 209
Paula Flowerday, Doug Waring

"What is the kingdom of God like?" Jesus answered this question through numerous parables and we will begin this 10-week study by discussing the purpose and essential properties of the parables, as well as the "proclaimers" of the parables – Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Then we’ll study how the various parables can inform our choices in our daily lives as we strive for God's kingdom on Earth. We’ll use Alyce McKenzie's 2007 The Parables for Today, published by the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation, as the primary text in this study. McKenzie is an associate professor of homiletics at Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas.

We will continue to use The Life of Meaning:  Reflections on Faith, Doubt, and Repairing the World as the springboard for our discussions. Join us as we turn our attention to those important questions that we never seem to have the time to discuss. Lively discussion is a staple of this class, as we hear and then reflect on a new essay each week.

Luke:  God’s Call to the Christian Community, the study for this quarter, looks at various passages in the Gospel of Luke that deal directly or indirectly with the way in which God calls the community of faith to live out the purpose for which it was created.

We’ll complete the DVD series “Saving Jesus” on January 20th and then begin a new study, on Philippians and Galatians from the Interpretation Bible Study materials, the following Sunday. We’ll round out the semester with a VHS series, led by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, entitled “What’s God Up To?  Bible Stories Through New Eyes,” when we’ll examine six familiar Bible stories from a new perspective. Join us as we explore the New Testament during the winter/spring semester. Visitors are always welcome!
