Since the time of the
Apostles, caring ministry has been considered a
hallmark of the Christian faith community.
Stephen Ministry is one way that our
congregation provides care to people
experiencing a difficult time in life, such as
grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal
illness, empty nest or other distress.
Stephen Ministers come from all walks of
life. Their commonality is a passion for
bringing Christ's love and care to people during
a time of need.
St. Andrew is one of
more than 12,000 congregations worldwide
participating in Stephen Ministry. Some of those
churches have fewer than 100 members, and some
have more than 10,000. They are in urban,
suburban and rural communities. They range from
traditional to contemporary, from congregations
founded in the 1700's to those planted in the
last decade.
The reason Stephen
Ministry works in all these contexts is because
no matter the size, type, or location of a
congregation, there is always a need for
compassionate laypeople capable of providing
high-quality, one-to-one, confidential Christian
care
to people going through any of life's many
difficulties
.
New training for Stephen
Ministers will start in January. Over the next
several weeks, we will ask in that you pray for
our Stephen Ministry and for those God is
calling to join us and become a caregiver. We
hope several of you are ready to answer that
call.
Please contact Richard,
Lisa or any Stephen Minister if you would like
more information about becoming a part of this
ministry.

Reformation
Celebration
To celebrate the 500th
anniversary of Martin Luther posting his 95
Theses, which began the Reformation, we
have two week-ends of exciting opportunities for
learning and worship. The Fall Festival
of Faith will host Dr. John Buchanan,
former moderator of the PCUSA and minister at
Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, who will
reflect on where he sees signs of the church
reforming today. Join him on Saturday night,
October 21 for dinner and conversation, Sunday
morning, October 22, during the Sunday School
hour, and then for worship when he will preach.
The next Sunday, October 29, we will celebrate a
Kirkin' o' th' Tartans in our
morning worship service. That afternoon we will
gather in our sanctuary with a combined choir
from our community as they present music and a
special anthem written for the 500th
anniversary.

Gathering
of the Clans #3
Why Do We
Celebrate the Kirkin' O' Th' Tartans?
The
tartan is a symbol of this love and
togetherness, no matter what our heritage. In
our Kirkin' service, we remember ancient times,
as well as past and present kith and kin, while
asking God's help and blessings in the future.
We celebrate clans and tartans because the
clansmen demonstrated true brotherhood and the
clan was the family. In early history, clans
were simply a gathering of peoples for their
protection and for economic, political and
social support. They were not necessarily
related by blood. Scotland in the mid-18th
century saw the English parliament and monarchy
(The Disarming Act, 1746 - 1782) banning
weapons, as well as the wearing of tartan or
kilts by Highland clansmen (effective August
1747). A latter-day legend has it that clansmen
would carry small pieces of the banned tartan
cloth to the Church (Kirk) and the clergymen
would slip a blessing into the service. Specific
tartans developed simply because each area liked
to weave a certain design using local herb dyes.
As a remembrance of early Scottish
Presbyterianism, Kirkin' o' th' Tartan worship
services have spread across America.

Good
Things Happening at SAPC, thanks to God!
The Stewardship Committee of St.
Andrew Presbyterian Church invites all members
to participate in a meditative art craft in
anticipation of our faithful giving response to
God's work during the fall stewardship season.
Members are encouraged to decorate cards
responding to the statement,
"Thanks to God
working through...., this GOOD THING
happened" and adding them to our
'response collages' which will be on display in
the Narthex. The cards, art supplies and craft
table are available for use in the Narthex
before and after church service or you can take
the cards home and bring them back prior to
Sunday September 17. The cards are anonymous but
we do ask that you voluntarily check the
demographic questions on the back to assist the
committee and the church in its work and
mission. Your cards and artwork will be an
integral part of the meditative and
contemplative reflections of our church
community as we focus on our goals and mission
for the next year.
