The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
Pastor's Column
I am making plans for moving my two daughters (middle and youngest) back to college. This year, their schedules allow for Leslie and me to assist both of them in moving, which makes me fondly remember the year when our two daughters (oldest and middle) had to move in at the same time, so we had to split up and I only had to make one move. Alas, this year the dates have aligned themselves for maximum moving opportunities for me! As my daughters begin another semester, they again will have opportunities to connect with local churches. They may not make it every Sunday (as they usually did at home when they knew their father the minister was looking out over the pews to see if they were in attendance and awake), but some weeks they, along with other college students from St. Andrew, might find themselves wanting to be in worship or needing to experience the community that church provides. After all, my daughters, like the youth growing up in St. Andrew, know what it is like to have people give them a hug, or ask about their lives, or sing a favorite hymn, or find motivation for the next week from the sermon. As I reflect on my hope that my daughters will find a community of faith to welcome them at college, I have two requests of our congregation. One, welcome all visitors, but especially welcome those college students who are wandering into our midst, unsure of what they need, but turning to a church community to give it to them. Two, if your sons or daughters are going off to college, let us know their new addresses in the church office, and we will send their name and address to a local Presbyterian church near them so that congregation can be on the look-out for when your college student might wander into their midst!

Peace,

Richard

Birthday Endowment Fund
This endowment was established in 2007 and provides income to fund mission efforts not covered by the annual mission budget. Income has been used in previous years to send children and sponsors to Mo-Ranch's Worship and Music Conference, as well as for mission projects such as water filtration systems for people in Guatemala. Traditionally, members contribute an amount equal to the number of years being celebrated. So on your next birthday remember this endowment and contribute toward making a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Did You Know?
We extend our heartiest congratulations to our friend and member of the St. Andrew family, the Reverend Trish Matthews, staff pastor of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. The Presbyterian Communities and Services Foundation will honor Trish at the 2017 Each Moment Matters luncheon on September 28, recognizing her gifts of time, faithful service, leadership, and integrity. The luncheon will benefit the Faith Presbyterian Hospice Caring Fund, with featured speaker Marlee Matlin. For tickets and more information, visit the website at http://bit.ly/2q4Gu6r.
Give a Meal a Month
June and July
St. Andrew Presbyterian Church members were very generous in June and July with contributions to the Denton Community Food Center. We donated 86 pounds of food and $225. The total monetary donations for both months equals more than $1575 worth of food purchasing power. Since January, we've given 428 pounds of food and donated a total of $868 in monetary contributions. As of right now, we have surpassed the entire monetary amount given in 2016 by $246. Keep up the good work everyone!
Fun Fact #1:The DCFC has empty shelves right now due to a lack of funds. Monetary donations are desperately needed. Remember, your monetary donation has 5-10 times more food purchasing power since the food is purchased through the Tarrant Area Food Bank.
Fun Fact #2: Summer is hard on low income parents since their children are not getting a free breakfast and lunch at school. Food and monetary donations are needed the most during summer months.
Fun Fact #3: June was our second highest month in total monetary donations.
