I
spent last week at Synod Youth Workshop, which I
also attended during high school and as an adult
chaperone and small group leader when I lived in
TX previously. The location was different
(University of Tulsa instead of Trinity
University); some of the events through the week
were new since I last attended (the service day
when we went into Tulsa on service projects and
walking the indoor labyrinth were welcome
additions; energizers several times a day not so
much - I felt a little like some of you might
have a few weeks ago when the youth led us in
energizers during worship!); but the core
activities remained the same (daily worship,
keynote presentations, and small groups
gatherings to reflect together). I expected to
experience an overwhelming sense of nostalgia
while there, after all, it was while I attended
as an adult leader years ago that I heard God's
call to give up my plans for law school and go
to seminary (a story for another time). But I
never made it to nostalgia because I was too
busy watching the youth explore and share about
their faith lives. I heard challenging and
uplifting stories; laughed a lot; slept too few
hours; made some new friends; and had a chance
to reflect on my own faith life. I was also
reminded that the youth may live out their faith
in a different context than we adults, but at
the core are similar questions we all ask: Am I
worthy of God's love and forgiveness? How can I
be faithful in the mess that is my life? What is
God doing with me? Maybe you recognize those
questions as well. God's answers are lived out
differently in our varying contexts, but I was
reminded last week in the songs we sang, the
worship we shared, the presentations heard that
at the core of those answers is God's resounding
"Yes!" in Christ Jesus.
Peace,
Richard

Lunch
n' Learn
with
The Rev. Renee Roederer on Nones and
Dones
Sunday,
July 23, 11:45am, Fellowship Hall
Do you know people who might describe themselves
as
spiritually curious but institutionally
suspicious? Perhaps you've heard of the
Nones, a
growing number of people in the U.S. who are
religiously unaffiliated, or the
Dones, a growing
number of Christians who have left traditional,
institutional congregations. After worship on
Sunday, July 23, everyone is invited to the
Lunch n' Learn at 11:45am to hear the Rev. Renée
Roederer, a guest speaker from Ann Arbor,
Michigan. She will tell us about Michigan Nones
and Dones, a new community in Southeast Michigan
that brings both Nones and Dones together for
friendship and conversations of spiritual
exploration. This vision has invigorated her
work as a minister and taught her a great deal
about the changing religious landscape in the
United States.
The Rev. Renee Roederer is serving
as a Community Chaplain in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Ordained as a Presbyterian minister, Rev.
Roederer has been commissioned by the Presbytery
of Detroit to serve as the first Community
Chaplain for Nones and Dones in the PC(USA).
Come join us for Lunch n' Learn as Rev. Roederer
tells us the exciting, unfolding story of
Michigan Nones and Dones, a new community of
friendship and spiritual exploration for people
who are "spiritually curious but institutionally
suspicious."

Thank You
To my St.
Andrew Presbyterian Family,
I wish to extend my sincerest and
most heartfelt gratitude to everyone at SAPC for
their thoughts, prayers, and messages to
myself and Robin. These always made me smile
during a very difficult time, with the passing
of my Mother, Mary Alice Jones (Hines). I
would also like to acknowledge a personal note
of thanks to Richard and Lisa for reaching out
to me via phone calls, those were very special
to me.
I'd like
to add a brief message to everyone: If
your Mother is alive today, reach out and tell
her you love her very much.
If you can
be with her, give her a big hug, too. If
your Mother has passed away, when you count your
blessings tonight,
count her
twice! That's what I'm going to do.
God Bless!
David,
Robin, Jason, Brandon & Rachel Hines
