Associate Pastor's Column
You may have noticed that during each baptism this past year, Richard and I have walked the newly baptized around the sanctuary speaking words of connection, meaning, and encouragement to the one who has been baptized. Much of the time, the newly baptized is too young to remember the sacrament, but the family of faith remembers and then has the opportunity to fulfill their covenant vows made at baptism to nurture the baptized in the faith. This may include telling the story of their baptism to them and sharing the meaning of this sacrament of grace. At the time of the other's baptism, our baptism is renewed, encouraged, and strengthened.
Baptism is the primary reference point for our lives as Christians. It orders our days, and its meaning is reinforced during daily acts of discipleship and repentance. It is much more than a one-time event that is never to be repeated. When we die and rise in Christ, we are given the garment of Christ's righteousness, and it is big enough for us to grow into our whole life long. The garment proclaims that God is not finished with us yet!
On Sunday, June 11th, we will reaffirm our baptismal vows during the 10:30 am worship service. This is an opportunity to celebrate the grace of God placed on us in baptism and to claim that grace once again for the ordering and orienting of our life in Christ. All worshipers will have the opportunity to come to one of the stations of baptism reaffirming their baptismal vows made last year or many years ago and touching the water of baptism, if desired, and then being anointed. We are reminded that "we are baptized" and the reminder renews our strength and courage to live a life of faith each and every day.

Grace and peace,

Lisa
Apple Tree Update
We welcomed Condell Garden, Executive Director of Interfaith Ministries, and Ernestina Lopez, their Development Specialist, to St. Andrew this past Sunday morning. The response to Condell's Moment for Mission was terrific-thank you!
We still have a few Apples left if you were unable to pick one last Sunday. If you did pick an Apple Sunday morning, please remember to return the Apple, with gift card attached, to the narthex on Sunday, or if you'd prefer, you can drop the Apple and gift card off in the church office during the week.

Summer Pastoral Care
As one of the core groups providing pastoral care at St. Andrew, Stephen Ministers (Deacons and pastors provide pastoral care as well) will be the "go to" people for any needs the two weeks both Dr. Culp and Rev. Patterson are out-of-town simultaneously. To be specific, if you have pastoral care needs arise on the weeks of June 5-June 9 or July 17-July 21, please contact Karen Dower (940-367-1001) or the church office (940-387-3897), and a Stephen Minister will be contacted to provide pastoral care assistance.
Homebound Communion
When a deacon is ordained, one of his/her responsibilities is to care for people within and beyond the walls of our congregation.  Homebound Communion is an avenue in which this responsibility is fulfilled.  After Communion is served in our Sanctuary, communion is taken to the homes, nursing homes, and hospitals of approximately 8 to 10 people who are unable to attend the service.  Our homebound are served each month by people who have been ordained either as a deacon or as an elder.   We want to reach out to people who are unaware of this extension of the Sacrament and ask you to contact us if you know of anyone who would like to be served.  In addition, we welcome you, the ordained (active or inactive) within the congregation, to participate in this meaningful and rewarding service.  Please contact Barbara Sims at barbaralazyhranch@hotmail.com or Debby Ishee at debbyishee@hotmail.com if you are interested in serving or know someone who would like to be served.
Thank You!
The Freeman Family, would like to truely express our appreciation to our Church Family in our time of loss of my Dad. The Memorial Service with Lisa P. and Edie C. was very emotional and wonderful and to the Diaconate for doing lunch and ushering.
Thank you all so much. We truly appreciate all the thoughts, prayers and cards too.

We Went to the Zoo! You Should Have Been There!
It started like any other Friday morning in Texas: early, sun peeking out through billowy clouds, a probability of thunder storms. But on that Friday morning, 38 adventurous souls boarded a tour bus at St. Andrew and headed for the Dallas Zoo. You should have been there!
With the new commuter lanes open on 35E, it was a quick trip, during which we were entertained by the jokes of Roger Lewis and the contents of our swag bags. Our bags always have a "quiz" and a pen and water and a few other goodies, like . . . a poncho.
We were greeted at the Zoo by Harrison Edell, our Conservation expert and guide for the day. After a brief welcome, we made our way to the Wilds of Africa Safari for a birds-eye view via monorail of 6 African ecosystems not accessible by foot. We saw Chimps, crocs, penguins, bongos, elands and vultures, waterfalls, ponds and pools.
Leaving the African ecosystems, we trekked onward to meet the Zoo's friendliest Okapi, one of several who cohabit the new Hippo Habitat. The only living relative of the giraffe, the Okapi has a long blue/black tongue, is beautiful, very gentle and, sadly, endangered.
Behind us and across a pond stretched the new 2.1-acre Hippo Habitat. And in that pond, were the two new Hippo inhabitants, Adhama and Boipelo. We left the hippos lazing about in preparation for their mid-morning keeper chat, for our Conservation Conversation in the Flamingo Room and the blessings of air-conditioning, comfortable chairs and water! You'd think we'd wandered the Sahara for days.
Once refreshed, we were so enthused that, with the generous contributions of our group, we were able to adopt some animals: a giraffe, an Asian Small-Clawed Otter, an Ocelot, and a Rock Hyrax! And, at the suggestion of a couple of our group members, we also adopted a Saddle-billed Stork and Hamerkop Stork (the largest and smallest of storks), as a token of appreciation for Harrison, his dedication to conservation, our group and to St. Andrew.
With these decisions made, we enjoyed a tasty and very filling lunch. And then we were free to roam the zoo, and roam we did. Some of us roamed in search of the nap room, while others took off for the elephants, giraffes and tigers. In the midst of our roaming, it became very clear why we had the ponchos! The heavens opened up and down came the rain. Big rain, heavy rain and more rain. You should have been there!
So, we headed for home, just about the time our itinerary said we would. And the rain got stronger, and the wind blew harder and by the time we reached Denton the streets were flooded and the water was coming in the door of the bus! Whew! But we had a great time. You should have been there!
Give a Meal a Month: May Results
St. Andrew Presbyterian Church members were very generous in May with contributions to the Denton Community Food Center. We donated 49 pounds of food, Circle #1 contributed $61, and the congregation gave $88. The total monetary donations equate to more than $1043 worth of food purchasing power. Since January, we've given 297 pounds of food and donated a total of $648 in monetary contributions. Keep up the good work everyone!
Fun Fact #1: Food recipients may receive food from the DCFC five times a year.
Fun Fact #2: The Denton Housing Authority provides the building for the DCFC rent free.
