Youth Column

Synod Youth Workshop is an annual high school youth retreat held at the University of Tulsa each July. Synod is an experience that can be difficult to describe. Words seem to fail when trying to describe the intensity of community, spirituality, acceptance and friendship experienced. As a teenager, I was always told you just have to experience it to understand. This year seven of our youth experienced Synod along with two adult sponsors and three adult staff members. It was a wonderful week being reminded that God chose us! Here is what they had to say about their week at Synod:

"Synod was incredibly fun. The entire week was filled with activities that were both fun and related to our faith. You make really good friends because almost all of your time is spent with the small group of people you're put with, in fact, I haven't gone a day without talking to my new friends so far. Overall, out of all the conferences, camps and mission trips I've been on this summer, Synod was by far my favorite."  James Fite

"Synod was an amazing experience for me. The people, the food, the worship were all so great. My small group clicked really quickly, which I am extremely grateful for, and the trip was just all around a fantastic experience."  Brookelyn Lewis

"I have had the privilege of chaperoning a variety of youth trips over the years, from Mo Ranch to Montreal to most recently Synod Youth Workshop in Tulsa... There is an intensity of community and the Holy Spirit is very much alive and present in the midst of the youth gathered from across our four state Synod. There are fun and games and energizers and song and dance, but the core of Synod is the connection, the community derived from the intentional breaking apart of "home groups"  and the creation of new "small groups". Mo Ranch, at times, also creates this environment, but mostly benefits from the splendor of God's natural creation. Synod benefits from the beauty found, explored and enriched in each one of our youth..."  Jonathon Fite

Memorial Fund for Helen Culp Schutts
A memorial fund has been established in Helen Culp Schutts name. As many of you know, Helen died in March of 2016 after a long battle with breast cancer. The fund will benefit The Children's Place at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, a childcare and preschool facility. Helen spent nearly 3 decades in elementary education helping young children learn to read. Fittingly, the money will go to the Helen Culp Schutts Memorial Library there. Money will be spent on the following items:

-Memorial plaque with Helen's name on it that will be placed on the wall leading upstairs where the library will be kept
-Books will be purchased that will be utilized in classrooms by teachers and students to encourage a love of reading and literacy
-Books purchased will be given a Book Plate that marks them as books that are part of the Helen Culp Schutts Memorial Library

If you would like to contribute to this fund, please send a check (The Children's Place has requested checks versus other methods of payment) made out to The Children's Place and mail to:
