Revisiting the
St. Andrew Mission Study 2015
A little more than a year ago, the St. Andrew Session established a temporary committee to conduct and create a Mission Study that would help guide the future of our congregation. As many will remember, the committee scheduled a series of visioning sessions to identify St. Andrew's core values and shape the vision of how we execute our mission.

The resulting Mission Study was presented to the congregation in mid-2015. It coincides with a broader sense of rejuvenation, energy, enthusiasm and excitement of what lies ahead. This awakened St. Andrew to the joys of spring and a new season of purpose and possibilities.

As a reminder, St. Andrew's core values include:
1. Exceptional Music and Worship
2. Quality Education and Programming for All Ages
3. Outreach to our Community and Beyond
4. Nurture and Compassion
5. Hospitality (Welcome, Acceptance and Inclusion)

These core values echo the four pillars of the previous 2006 Strategic Plan that identified Worship, Teaching/Learning, Outreach and Community as the strategic focus areas for the congregation.

Over the next few months, articles in The Shield will share with readers the ways St. Andrew is springing into action and how our Mission is being executed through activities taking place.

Highlights of the May Stated Meeting of the Session

At the May 18, 2016 Stated Meeting the Session:
  • heard touching statements of faith and viewed a beautiful video of an interpretive ballet by the confirmand class of 2016,
  • learned that St. Andrew contributed 45 pounds of food and enough monetary donations to enable the Denton Food Center to purchase 441 pounds of food in the past month,
  • approved an updated St. Andrew Personnel Manual which contains new maternity/ paternity/adoption provisions for church employees,
  • heard that ten new members have joined St. Andrew to date this year, and
  • learned that the dedication of the new hymnals has been moved to Sunday, June 26 and will involve a hymn fest led by Jeff Snider, Music Director.
Officer Nominating Committee
Each year at this time, our church undergoes the important task of choosing officers for the new year. The Officer Nominating Committee invites your recommendations for the class of 2019. According to the Book of Order, individuals who undertake particular ministries, including elders and deacons, should be persons of strong faith, dedicated discipleship, and love of Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.  Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel in the church and in the world.
For the next two weeks, nomination forms will be in the Sunday bulletins. Please prayerfully consider individuals who have  demonstrated gifts of leadership and a commitment to the life and ministry of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.  You may turn in your nominations to any member of the Officer Nominating Committee, or to the specially marked box in the church office. Nomination forms are due Sunday, June 26.
Members of this year's ONC are:
     Joe Alford
     Brian Brooks
     James Black
     Jo Cassell
     Leigh Kitchens
     Patricia Highland

PNC Progress Report

Your Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) has made progress. We have received 100 Pastor Information Forms (PIF). Most have been carefully reviewed. A number were eliminated from consideration because the person was at the beginning or end of their career. Our Ministry Information Form (MIF) listed mid-career qualifications. Several people meet our guidelines to be the pastor of St. Andrew.

We found that the salary we planned to offer was not sufficient to attract a pastor with the qualities and experience described in the MIF. Our Presbytery liaison agreed and made suggestions. We discussed the salary with the Session and they have allowed an increase in the maximum effective salary (salary and housing).

Please keep the PNC in your prayers as we seek God's guidance in our continuing search.

Vacation Bible School: Registration Now Open
June 27-July 1, 9am-12pm
Vacation Bible School registration is now open at www.saint-andrew.com/vbs. This year's curriculum is titled "Surf Shack: Catch the Wave of God's Amazing Love!" At the "Surf Shack" kids encounter God's awesomeness through Bible stories and learn how we're meant to experience the adventure each day. The children will study stories of the Bible that will teach us how to experience God's amazing love, explore God's mission for our lives, encounter powerful water stories from the Bible, and discover ways to live out God's amazing love. We are all looking forward to a fun week!
The children will be provided with a snack during the week. Please send your children in clothes that can withstand paint stains, grass stains, energetic activity, and survive. We will run, dance, play, sing, paint, experiment, and eat, and we want your children to be able to do all of these activities without having to worry about keeping clothes clean. For our preschoolers, it is always a good idea to pack an extra set of clothes in case of an accident.
Don't forget to bring your mission items! We will be donating water bottles, bug repellent, sunscreen, deodorant (male & female), disposable razors, and toothbrushes  to Our Daily Bread - the soup kitchen located at St. Andrew. Our neighbors at Our Daily Bread need extra water for the hot summers and food to keep them healthy.

Apple Tree Project
It's that time of year again! For over 10 years, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church members have been making an impact through the Apple Tree Project. Our church, through the Community Outreach Committee, has been affiliated with the citywide Apple Tree Project sponsored by Interfaith Ministries of Denton. The project identifies families who are struggling financially and unable to provide the back-to-school essentials for their children. Interfaith Ministries also uses grants to help purchase school supplies and shoes in bulk economically to assist more families. The apples will be available in the Narthex after June 1, and you can choose the child you would like to support by purchasing two sets of clothing. Or you may contribute monetarily by marking your check "Apple Tree Project". The deadline for donations of clothing, gift cards or checks is July 22. Additional instructions will be provided when you pick up your apple.
Passing the Peace
We will begin the tradition of 'passing the peace' in our June worship services.
As we, who are ambassadors for Christ (2 Cor. 5:20), greet one another in worship, let us pass the peace of Christ, not simply as the greeting of our pew neighbor, but as our heart felt hope that our neighbor and our world will experience Christ's peace and reconciling love.
Jesus greeted his disciples with "Peace be with you" (Luke 24:36).  Let us also greet one another in the same manner following Jesus example.
Chancel Flowers
The Sundays of July 10, 17, and 24 are available for chancel flowers. If you would like to sign up for any of these dates, please do so on the flower roster. The roster is located on the bulletin board next to the office. Lynn Carrico will contact you before your Sunday.
Summer Shield Schedule
The Shield will start its summer schedule beginning this week. The Shield will be published bi-weekly on the following dates: 6/23, 7/7, 7/21, 8/4, 8/18, 9/1.
Narthex Fellowship
The 'after worship' Fellowship Hour refreshments for the month of May will be provided by the members of the Youth Committee. The June, July and August refreshments will be provided by the members of the congregation according to last names. Watch for more announcements.
Summer After-Worship Fellowship Time
The Fellowship Time after the worship will continue through the summer. The Membership Committee would like to ask that each member contribute two dozen cookies or a fruit platter served on a disposable plate on the date that corresponds to the first letter of your last name. If you are going to be out of town on that date, feel free to bring your goodies on any Sunday. This is a wonderful opportunity to greet our members, as well as to meet our visitors each Sunday.
