The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
On Sunday, February 7, the Mission Committee is planning something very different for St. Andrew. Sunday will begin with a short devotional service at 9:00am in the Sanctuary, followed by an opportunity for us to serve as a congregation together by moving to the Fellowship Hall to construct meals for an organization called Kids Against Hunger. There will be jobs for young and old, strong and weak, and everyone in between. The plan is to be done with the meal construction by 11:30am.  The meals we prepare will be distributed to children and families around the world who have need for them. Please join us as we worship through working together.
Tackle Hunger this Souper Bowl Sunday!
On Wednesday, February 3 and Sunday, February 7, the youth group at St. Andrew will be collecting monetary and non-perishable food donations as a part of the nationwide, Souper Bowl Sunday event. This fundraising effort is to bring awareness to the needs of the hungry changing the "biggest day of football to the biggest day of caring!" The collection taken at St. Andrew, both physical and monetary, will go directly to Our Daily Bread. Look for the youth with the orange buckets on February 3 & 7!
Communion in February
Communion will be observed at St. Andrew on Sunday, February 14 instead of on Sunday, February 7.
Prime Time
The Prime Timers will meet on Friday, February 5, 2016, at 12:30pm in room 206/208. Please come and listen to Richard Sale tell us  "How To Live To 100 and Like It."  He will be talking about aging and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and will discuss the "Blue Zones" around the world--places where people do live to 100, are healthy and have lifestyles that are similar.
Bring a sack lunch or just come for dessert (provided). Hope to see you there! Call me at 940-367-7327 if you have questions.

Ash Wednesday Service
February 10, 7:30pm
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, and we will hold a worship service in the sanctuary on February 10 and encourage you to participate. For those who wish to receive them, the imposition of ashes will be offered. The imposition of ashes has a long history in biblical and church traditions. In Scripture ashes or dust symbolize frailty or death (Gen. 18:27), sadness or mourning (Esther 4:3), judgment (Lam. 3:16), and repentance (Jon. 3:6). Some traditions also have considered ash a purifying or cleansing agent. All these images are caught up in the church's use of ashes as a symbol appropriate for Lent. In Christ's passion we see God's judgment on evil; in our penitence we express sorrow and repentance for our sins; in our rededication we show that we are purified and renewed. Holy Communion will not be celebrated at this service.
"Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return."
Women's Lenten Book Study
The study will begin on Ash Wednesday using The Book of Genesis: A Biography by Ronald Hendel as the starting point for our lively discussions of life, faith, and the implications for how we live as people of faith. Genesis is the very foundation of our faith and is an important lens for the very way we view our past, present, and future reality. If you're traveling and can only attend a few sessions, don't let that keep you away, because you can enter the discussion at any point. Come and join the group! Questions? Contact Lisa Patterson at  lisa@saint-andrew.com.
Parents' Night Out
Saturday, February 13, 4pm-9pm
Parents' Night Out is a program for the young families of St. Andrew. The program has a two-fold purpose: it gives parents an opportunity to spend quality time together without their children and it gives the children an evening of fun, with age-appropriate activities, with their friends at St. Andrew.
The evening begins at 4:00pm-8:00pm, for infants-3 yr. olds, in the Nursery. In the Rec. Center, 4 yr. olds-elementary age will meet from 4:00pm-9:00pm. Children may bring dinner.
The older children's activities will include outdoor play (weather permitting), planned craft activities, snacks, and gym play. The activities are supervised by Nursery Staff. We ask parents to make reservations no later than Thursday, the week of PNO. This ensures the evening will be properly supervised. Please email Ms. Sue at: toddlerqueen2@gmail.com, or call at
940-300-9262, for reservations.
We have a donation basket, near the sign-in sheet. Donations are used to cover the cost of the staff. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Sue.
Spring Dates: 2/13, 3/12, 4/9/ 5/14
Small Group Bible Study
The members at St. Andrew are committed to our common life together, which is born from our connections to Christ and His Church. Because of this, we will be offering small group Bible studies where people can come together in fellowship to learn more about the Bible, explore questions of faith, and examine our role as Christ Followers in today's society. Small groups will meet on Sunday or Thursday evenings beginning February 14 and 18. To sign up or for more information, please email Kirsten Brown at brownke@lisd.net. Please indicate your night preference.

Thank You!

To Our Church Family,

For all the prayers, cards, visits, homebound communion, flowers and food, there are not enough words to express our gratitude for the love and support from our church family. We have felt God's loving arms around Willis and our family throughout this journey.
The memorial service was beautiful, glorifying God and giving thanks for Willis's life. We are grateful to Alan, Fred, Lisa, the ushers, and the Bereavement Committee for their leadership and participation in the service.
"3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Sincerely,
Catherine Mitchell and Family
Be Holy Lenten Devotionals Available in the Narthex
Lent is a holy journey with God, but what does it mean exactly to be "holy"? In  Be Holy Presbyterians Today 's new Lenten devotional for 2016, pastor and author Brian Coulter has penned a series of brief daily reflections, paired with a short, ancient form of praise and petition called a breath prayer, to explore what holiness means for Christians today. He invites us to receive from God this blessed gift that makes our lives more compelling, more enjoyable, and more faithful. Please pick one up in the Narthex.
Save the Date
Please save the evening of Thursday, Feb.25 to attend the annual fundraising dinner for The Children's Place Preschool. This is our major fundraising event of the year. We will serve delicious food from Cartwright's and Olive Garden, and take out will be available. We will also have a silent auction and a raffle. The money raised at this event helps us keep tuition affordable, pay our teachers, and purchase supplies. Please support the preschool by attending.
Supplies for Denton Christian Preschool
Your Diaconate committees are gearing up to begin a new year. The Community Outreach Committee strives to provide opportunities for members of St. Andrew to assist with community needs through donations and volunteer opportunities. We have several projects during the year, almost one per month! We are currently looking to determine if there are additional ways for the congregation to participate in the many needs of our community.
For the months of January and February, our project is to provide supplies for the children of Denton Christian Preschool. Current needs are: glue sticks, liquid hand soap, dry erase markers, safety pins, large crayons, construction paper, lunch bags, paper plates, toilet paper, children's toothpaste, AA batteries and 9V batteries.
Please leave your donated items in the bins next to the Coke machine downstairs. If you have any questions, please call June McNeill, 940-591-6080.
From the Music Director
The "Glory to God Hymnal Fund" is closing in on the halfway point to our goal. Thank you so much to all of you who have already given generously! We would very much like to complete the process of acquiring the new hymnals and have their dedication be part of our service on Trinity Sunday (May 22).
Please consider what you and your family can contribute to help make this happen!
-Jeff
