The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
Summer Lunch Program Column
More than twenty members and three TWU graduate students participated with the Denton Parks & Recreation Department program to feed youth living in the Village East Apartments in Denton lunches for ten weeks. The Parks Department prepared sack lunches and delivered them to the apartments and our members took turns distributing the lunches to students who would be eligible for free or reduced lunches if school were in session. All participating members agree that this was a low intensity - high reward mission that fit into our complex summer time and work schedules. We were glad to share the experience with Dr. Gina Anderson's graduate students and to note that Saint Andrew was again the only church participating in this Parks Department program.

Barks for Bailey
Finally, I get to answer some more dog questions!
  • My favorite human food???  McDonald's cheeseburgers without the pickles!
  • Rylie, my favorite treats are the leftover cookies and chips that fall on the floor in the Narthex after Church!  (I also like all kinds of dog treats.)
  • Do I like to bark at squirrels or people?  Definitely squirrels.  They deserve it!  They steal the food that's in the bird feeder in my yard, and last week I almost caught one that was stealing the stuffing out of our neighbor's lawn cushions.  Why else did God create squirrels if not for dogs to bark at them and chase them?
  • Am I lazy, yes or no???  That's a silly question.  If there is a squirrel around, no way!  If it's late afternoon and I have been working hard all day at the church. . . it's nap time!!!  That's not being lazy.  It's being smart!  Naps are good for you.

Parking on Sunday, September 6
On Labor Day weekend, there will be a two-day timed bicycle race. On Sunday, September 6 from 6:00am-6:00pm Oak Street will be closed from the Courthouse square to Piner Street, therefore, people will be unable to park that day on that portion of Oak Street; neither will they be able to access the Verizon parking lot.
In addition to parking in both our east and west lots and in the Day Break lot east of Cross Timbers Church, for that one day only, the Denton Police Department will allow parking on the west side of Bolivar Street from the entrance to our main parking lot to East McKinney Street. Also, we may park across Bolivar Street at the former fire station.
The Children's Place

Presbyterian Women
Circle I meets Tuesday, September 8 at 9:30am in the church Parlor and Jo Cassell and Irma Waring will be hostess!  We will begin the Study  "Come to the Waters" our Horizons Bible Study for 2015-16. Collect $1.00 for DCPS and $1.00 for Denton Food Pantry. All ladies are welcome.  Contact Linda Heilig, Chairman circle I at 940-381-9934.
Circle II meets Tuesday, at 9:30am, September 8 at the home of Marcia Merritt.  In Lesson 1 (Genesis 1:1-2:4) we learn how God gave birth to all creation out of chaotic waters.  Our 2015-16 study is titled "Come to the Waters," which explores the Bible's more than 800 references to water, such as the central role of water in Genesis, the adoption of God's people through baptism, and the River of Life in Revelation 22, where chaos is no more. All ladies are welcome.  Please phone Lib Berry (940-584-0128) for information.
Tuesday Afternoon Women's Bible Study
The ladies afternoon Bible Study group will begin our fall semester on September 8 with a one day study of the book of James.  Protestant theologians are vexed by James' claim that "faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead," (James 2:17) and by the book's insistence that faith alone cannot bring salvation. There's a lot to consider in this one-session Bible study, but ideally participants will leave the session with some understanding of several key themes in James.
Join us on Tuesday, September 8 in room 206 at 1:30pm for a lively discussion with an ecumenical group of women. Books for N.T Wright's study of John will be available that day for $9.00 each.  We will start these lessons on September 15.  Hope to see you all there.

Summer Coffee Hour Treats
After the success and fun of last summer's "coffee hour" after Sunday worship, we will do it again this summer! Each Sunday different groups will provide some treats for you to share. If possible, please use disposable plates/dishes for the treats.  If the plate/dish is not disposable, you may pick it up in the Narthex workroom later, so please make sure your name is on it. Extras will be frozen for later use and not wasted.

Stephen Ministry
Are you or someone you know going through a difficult time?  Do you feel like you don't know where to turn or who would want to listen to your problems?  Would you find comfort in sharing your feelings in a completely confidential environment?  St. Andrew can help you through the Stephen Ministry program.  Stephen Ministry is a confidential ministry of caring and love.  Through Stephen Ministry, a trained caregiver will join you on your journey to healing.  Your Stephen Minister will listen to your worries and provide caring support until you feel like yourself again. Talk to Alan or Lisa about how Stephen Ministry can help you.
