The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
Why a Kirkin'?
After members ask what a kirkin' service is all about, they often follow up with, "But why?"  Why should St Andrew Presbyterian Church of Denton, Texas, half a world and centuries away from our Scottish roots, have a Kirkin' o' the Tartans' service in 2015?

In Ecclesiastes, we are told that there is "a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance" (3:4).   A kirkin' service celebrates our faith, our church family, our biological families, our history and our future.   We were created by God to celebrate, to laugh, dance and find joy in our lives.  It is easy to forget that is part of our purpose and instead to be swallowed up by our daily struggles, losses and fears.  We lose sight of our many blessings.

The 'kirk' is the church -- not the building, but the people of God.  The 'kirkin' of the tartans seeks a blessing on the people of God's church - on individual families and the body of believers as a whole.  It is important that we take time to cherish our own biological families, the families of choice we have built around us, the family we have found at St. Andrew, the family we have in the Presbyterian church and the family we have in God's church everywhere.  They are cause for thanks and celebration!

The kirkin' service will help us reflect on the history of our church and how faith is never found or held easily.  It will help us focus on the importance and strength of all our families.  It will remind us that God has richly blessed us, our families and our church.  And it is a time to laugh, to dance, to give thanks and to share our joy in our Christian faith and in our chosen place and form of worship.  Come join the celebration!

Another Kirkin' Update fer Ye:
April 19, One Service, 10:50am
Our Kirkin' o' the Tartans service on April 19 is only days away.   Press your kilts and practice your brogue.  We're going to celebrate the Scottish roots of our church and its international reach.  If your wardrobe doesn't contain a variety of tartan plaids, we invite you to wear clothing that represents your own family history.  In all our diversity, we are members of one St. Andrew family.  The Kirkin' service will begin with a processional at 10:30am.  If you want to march with the clan banners, or with the larger St. Andrew family, please be here by 8:45am that morning to rehearse the processional.  Watch the Kirkin' page on the church web site for updates.
Support the Kirkin' Service
The Kirkin' service is made possible by the generosity of individual donors and the efforts of many volunteers.   We have covered the majority of the costs of this special outreach event, but need some help in covering the remaining expenses.  If you would like to support the Kirkin' service, please leave your donation in the church office and indicate that it is for Kirkin' expenses.
More Food Ahead: Kirkin' O' the Tartans Pot Luck
Everyone enjoys good food at St. Andrew!  After our Kirkin' O' the Tartans Service on Sunday, April 19, we will hold a church-wide Scottish and international pot luck to celebrate our diverse church-wide cultures.  Explore your culinary creativity and bring the Scottish, foreign, or American food you enjoy the most, from appetizers to desserts.  We will have warming ovens turned on before worship so you can place your dishes in there to keep warm.   Cool dishes can be put in the refrigerator, and we will have volunteers to receive food and assist.  Coffee, tea, and water will be served.  We know that you will all be hungry and ready to eat a wonderful meal after church that day, so put April 19 on your calendar for a Scottish and international feast, filled with entertainment and merriment!
Prime Time
Prime Timers will meet on Friday, April 10 in room 206/208 at 12:30pm. Our speaker this month will be our own Bob Schumm. Nancy and Bob visited the Sheik Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi ($500,000,000 to construct), a Sikh temple and soup kitchen in India where they serve 5000 people every day, and a Hindu festival on the Ganges River.  They also viewed sunrise ritual bathing in the Ganges and cremations being performed along its banks. He will bring photos and will talk about life in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (40 miles apart) and the places and things they saw in India.
Bring a sack lunch and/or join us for dessert (provided). Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there! If you have questions, call Clarice Luce at 940-367-7327 or email mamaluce_29@yahoo.com.

Summer Lunch Program
The Mission Committee is again coordinating the distribution of lunches provided by the Denton Parks & Recreation Department. This summer we will be serving many more students at the Village East Apartments (University and Mingo).  It takes less than an hour per shift. You can sign up in the narthex and complete the application forms or email scanned forms. Contact Bob Stewart (940-262-3364) for more information.
The St. Andrew Directories Have Arrived!
Distribution of the membership directories will begin on the following dates:  Super Wednesday, April 8; Sunday, April 12; Super Wednesday, April 15; and Sunday, April 19.  Distribution on Wednesdays will be in Fellowship Hall from 5:30-6:30pm.  Sunday distribution will be in the Narthex between services and after the 10:50am service.  Directories will not be mailed so please try to pick yours up during one of these four dates.
A directory will be set aside for each of you who had a portrait made and there were extra copies ordered for other members to enjoy.  If you did not participate in the directory but would like a copy, a $5.00 donation to help cover the costs of printing extra copies would be appreciated.
Wonderful New Magnetic Name Tags!
The Membership Committee has listened to many complaints about how difficult it is to read the names on our current name tags, as well as what a challenge it is to wear them.  Lynn Carrico has diligently searched to find a great deal for us to obtain brand new magnetic name tags in blue with white letters.  The tags are 1 ?" by 3" with only first and last names on them, which are very readable!  The budget does not allow for Membership to purchase them, but the tags may be purchased by individuals for only $5.00 each.  This also means that if a family wants to have name tags for their children, they can order those, too.  Lynn will have a sample name tag to show and will begin taking orders for the name tags on Super Wednesday, April 8, at the same time as the new directories will be given out.  We will continue taking orders throughout April at Super Wednesdays and on Sunday mornings.  Be sure to order yours now!
Congratulations, Larry!
Larry Wolf, St. Andrew member and assistant custodian, has been selected by Giving HOPE Inc. as one of their four recipients for a fully furnished apartment for an entire year rent free through the 100,000 Homes Campaign. Larry was a client at Our Daily Bread who wanted to give back so he faithfully volunteered five days a week. We were fortunate enough to be able to hire him as one of our assistant custodians. Larry is a faithful member and is always at the 8:30 a.m. service ready to wish us all a great day and to share how God has blessed his life.  Larry will move into his new apartment on Thursday, April 9, 2015. Congratulations, Larry!

Calling All with CPR/AED Certifications
Some of us recently completed the Heartsaver CPR AED training, sponsored by the American Heart Association. I realize there are others of you, because of your job requirements or perhaps other reasons, who hold current CPR AED certification.
I would appreciate your sending me your name, the organization that provided your training, the name of the training you received and the expiration date. Once you forward that information to me, I'll add that to the list of those who recently completed the training here at St. Andrew. We'll then post that combined list on the wall right beside the AED in the workroom, right off the narthex. If you have any questions, please contact Jim White at the church office 940-387-3897 or via e-mail:  jim@saint-andrew.com. Thank you.
