Dear Parents & Children,

You are reading the very first issue of the new Children's Ministry newsletter, Covenant Connection. It is our hope that it will help you and your family stay better connected with the many children's activities at St. Andrew. In each edition we will share ideas and resources that are intended to help you weave faith into your family life.
The first Sunday in Advent always marks the beginning of the new Church year. Advent is a time of preparation and celebration as we eagerly anticipate the coming of Christ. It is a time that we use to prepare our hearts to receive the love of God through the gift of Jesus Christ. Christmas marks the glorious celebration of Jesus' birth.
During this busy time of the year, let's make time to slow down. Advent is a time when lasting memories are created, a time when important traditions are passed down, and a time when new traditions are born. I pray that your family's journey to Bethlehem this season will be filled with rich meaning and purpose as we prepare for Jesus' coming.

Peace and grace,
Michael Ball, Moderator, Children's Ministry

Classroom Connection
We will transition into Advent in Sunday school using Isaiah 11:1-12, where the prophet Isaiah promises that a new king will restore God's Covenant with the house of David:  "A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots." This story ties to Question 14 from Belonging to God:  A First Catechism.
Question:  What did God do to help us? Response:  God chose the people of Israel to make a new beginning. They received God's covenant and prepared the way for Jesus to come as our Savior.
As we talk about prayer in Sunday school, we have focused on these components:  Praise (we call it WOW), Confession (we call it Oops), Supplication (we call it Please Help), Thanksgiving (Thanks!), and finally Amen ("so be it").

Celebrating the Season of Advent
Advent is a special time for both children and adults. The word "Advent" comes from the Latin word meaning "to come," and the season runs during the four Sundays before Christmas Day. Using any of these traditions helps connect church with daily family life and makes the season more meaningful and memorable.
Advent Wreath - consists of greenery, four purple candles with a larger white candle in the center, the Christ candle, which is lit to celebrate the birth of the Christ child on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. An Advent wreaths can "form a focal point for family worship" by placing it at the center of your dinner table, and using it as part of your meal time prayer. Read an Advent devotional, scripture, sing a favorite Christmas hymn, or just use it as a time of reflection and prayer. Children love lighting candles!
Advent Calendar or Chain - Advent calendars can be purchased or made. The calendar can be a special way to celebrate the season as you count down toward Christmas. An Advent Chain made from colorful paper strips is another easy way to count the days. Cut enough strips of paper to make it to Christmas. Each day you attach another strip and the chain lengthens each day. Some families write a Bible verse on the strip, draw a picture, or even write down their joys for the day.

Rehearsal Schedule
- We will have two extra Wednesday rehearsals in December: December 2 and 9. We will observe our regular schedule:  Covenant Choir will rehearse from 6:15-7:00pm and Noel Choir from 7:00-7:30pm. Malicia Curran will run the recreation period as usual those two nights in the Rec Center.
- We will also rehearse for Christmas Eve Sunday, December 20, at 9:15 in the children's choir room, our one and only rehearsal with the organist for that service.

Thank you for your faithful participation in the choir program!
