HISTORY

The Roots of This Congregation
St. Andrew Presbyterian Church has been in existence since 1862 when it was formed as part of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. A group of six families, led by a Presbyterian minister, the Rev. R. R. Dunlap put down their spiritual roots in the frontier town of Denton, Texas. At the time, there were no church buildings in town, although both the Methodists and the Baptists already had formed congregations.

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church became Denton’s third church to be organized. Through the years, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church has been part of three denominations. After its early identity in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, it became part of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America when those two bodies voted to merge in the early 1900s. In 1983, our denomination became the Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.), as the two major streams of Presbyterianism in this country became one.

Through the years, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church has grown from its beginning of six families to a congregation of approximately 700 members, endeavoring to be faithful to Jesus Christ in proclaiming the good news of salvation. People who have been touched by Christian grace, reaching out to share Christ’s grace with others—that has been and continues to be our calling and purpose.
